2. Lama Monachile
Lama Monachile translates to “Monk Blade”. Grotta della Poesia or “The Cave of Poetry” is not what you might typically thing of when you are looking for the best beaches in Puglia. It’s rocky and sandless. But what it lacks in golden sand, it makes up for in history and adventure.
There are caves to explore, an archaeological site to see, and of course the stunning pool to swim in.
According to legend, a beautiful princess loved to bathe in the crystal clear waters. The stunning sight of both the princess and the natural pools was the muse of countless poets – hence the name. While this tale may or may not be true, there are inscriptions on some of the cave walls from Messapian times.
In order to lessen the impact from tourism and help improve this archaeological site, there is a small 3 euro fee to access the area.
